From the World’s First 360-Degree Compact Excavator to Machines Built for Every Jobsite

In 1971, Takeuchi developed the TB1000, the world’s first 360-degree compact excavator.

At the time, excavators were primarily large machines. On jobsites where large equipment could not go, such as urban road construction and residential foundation work, much of the work still had to be done by hand using shovels and picks.

This idea, inspired by the needs of the jobsite, led to the development of the TB1000. After extensive trial and error, the machine was completed and production began in 1971. Its innovative 360-degree slew design and compact size made it possible to mechanize work in tight spaces where conventional equipment could not operate, greatly expanding the possibilities of construction equipment.

When it was first introduced, some people even described the small machine as looking like a “toy.” But its productivity and ease of operation quickly earned the trust of contractors. As demand for small-scale construction in urban areas grew, the TB1000 spread rapidly and helped create an entirely new market for compact excavators.

More than half a century later, Takeuchi Excavators continue to evolve.

Building on the idea established with the TB1000—solving jobsite challenges through machine design—Takeuchi continues to develop excavators that respond to the changing needs of jobsites around the world.

Excavators Designed for Where and How You Work

The performance an excavator needs depends on the jobsite.

On jobsites with plenty of room to work, productivity comes from getting the most out of the machine, from digging and grading to loading. In residential and urban areas, however, operators need to work efficiently in tight spaces while minimizing the impact on surrounding structures and people. And when work takes place across multiple locations, the ability of a Wheeled Excavator to travel on public roads can make a major difference.

To meet these different needs, Takeuchi has expanded its Excavator lineup beyond Conventional Excavators to include the R Series, FR Series, Wheeled Excavators, TM Series, and Electric Excavators.

Each series is designed around the challenges of a different type of jobsite.

Conventional Excavators — A Standard Built for Stable Excavation

Conventional Excavators have supported Takeuchi’s excavator lineup since the company’s early days. They offer a well-balanced combination of the fundamental performance expected from an excavator, along with the versatility to handle a wide range of jobsites and applications.

From excellent digging power to durability, operability, and operator comfort, they deliver Takeuchi’s core strengths at a high level. They can handle a variety of tasks, including excavation, grading, and loading, with power and efficiency. Their stable machine balance also enables smooth operation throughout the entire process, from digging to loading.

From site preparation and civil engineering to agriculture and landscaping, Conventional Excavators demonstrate their overall balance in jobsites where one excavator is expected to handle a wide range of tasks.

The fundamental performance of an excavator has been refined through years of work in the field. That accumulated experience continues to support Takeuchi’s Conventional Excavators.

R Series — More Freedom in Tight Spaces

As jobsites move into urban areas and residential neighborhoods, excavators face a new challenge: working where space is limited.

When working close to buildings, roads, and other structures, every inch matters. That's why Takeuchi developed the R Series, featuring a short-tail swing design.

Its compact footprint and reduced rear overhang provide a major advantage when working in confined spaces. But the R Series is about more than simply making the machine smaller. Takeuchi made effective use of the available space inside the machine as well, providing the operator with a surprisingly spacious and comfortable working environment. At the same time, there is no compromise on the fundamentals of excavator performance. With excellent stability, a wide working range, and strong digging power, the R Series combines a compact footprint with high performance.

From residential landscaping and construction along roadsides to excavation close to buildings, the R Series is designed for jobsites where space is limited but high performance is still required. With a compact footprint, a spacious operator area, and uncompromising performance, the R Series opens up new possibilities in confined jobsites.

FR Series — Bringing Compact Excavator Maneuverability to Mid-Size Machines

On jobsites along roads or buildings, limited working space can mean constantly repositioning the machine to reach different areas. The FR Series was designed to solve this challenge, allowing operators to excavate a wider area efficiently without repeatedly moving the machine.

In 1999, Takeuchi introduced the FR Series, bringing the concept of “bringing the ultimate maneuverability of a mini excavator to a mid-size machine” to life with its unique STS (Side-to-Side) boom system. 

STS moves the base of the boom from side to side. Because the boom can move across the full width of the machine, operators can continuously excavate a wide area without having to reposition the machine for every section of work. This is particularly useful when digging trenches along walls or sidewalks, where the operator can maintain a natural position facing the direction of work, helping reduce fatigue during long hours on the job. Combined with a short-tail design, the STS system also allows the machine to perform a 360-degree swing with minimal overhang. This helps reduce the risk of interference with surrounding objects while maintaining high productivity in confined spaces.

But maneuverability is not the only strength of the FR Series. Even when the boom is moved from side to side, the counterweight remains at the rear of the machine, providing excellent stability. The ability to maintain a stable weight balance regardless of boom position is another key advantage of the FR Series.

Wheeled Excavator — Connecting Jobsite to Jobsite

An excavator's work doesn't always stay in one place. When operators need to move between multiple jobsites, the ability of a Wheeled Excavator to travel on public roads under its own power becomes a major advantage.

Takeuchi entered the wheeled excavator market with the TB070W in 1995 and has continued developing wheeled excavators ever since. These machines must meet strict regulations for public-road travel while also delivering the digging and loading performance expected of an excavator. Through close discussions with customers in different markets, Takeuchi has continued to refine its specifications and pursue machines that deliver a high level of performance both on the road and on the jobsite.

With their road-going capability, Wheeled Excavators can move from one jobsite to another without waiting for a transport vehicle. This can reduce the time and effort required for relocation, helping save both time and cost. The ability to use a wide range of attachments also allows one machine to take on multiple types of work, making it especially valuable on jobsites where versatility is essential.

Not just “dig,” but “drive.” By changing attachments, one machine can handle a wide range of tasks. Wheeled Excavators expand the possibilities for both travel and work, taking excavators into even more places.

TM Series — Built for Deep Excavation and Specialized Jobsites

Excavators don't only work above ground. Some jobs, such as the construction of foundations for transmission towers, require excavation deep below the surface. These specialized jobsites can be difficult for conventional excavators to access and require machines designed specifically for working in confined excavation spaces.

Takeuchi's TM Series was developed in 1993 as a specialized excavator for deep foundation work, including the construction of transmission tower foundations. Unlike conventional excavators, it is designed to operate in the confined spaces and challenging conditions of deep excavation sites.

Deep foundation excavation can involve digging vertically from the surface to depths of tens of meters. With very limited space inside the excavation shaft, the machine needs to be compact while still providing the performance needed to excavate efficiently. It must also be designed to operate in an environment very different from that of a conventional excavator.

The TM Series has been continuously developed and refined to meet these specialized requirements. It is also an electric machine powered by a generator through a wired connection, making this power system well suited to working deep inside excavation shafts.

From transmission tower foundation work to other jobs requiring excavation deep below the surface, the TM Series is designed for specialized applications where conventional excavators may not be suitable. By focusing on the unique demands of deep foundation excavation, the TM Series delivers the performance needed to get the job done in some of the most challenging excavation environments.

And the Next Step — Electric Excavators

As the construction industry continues to change, Takeuchi has also been exploring new technologies to meet emerging jobsite needs. One of these areas is electrification, which can help reduce environmental impact while improving the working environment.

In 2006, Takeuchi developed a prototype of the TB016E, the world's first lithium-ion battery-powered excavator. At a time when electrification was still uncommon in construction equipment, Takeuchi was already exploring the potential of zero emissions and significantly reduced noise. That work continued with the TB117e and led to the global launch of the full-battery-powered TB20e in 2023.

The TB20e is designed to deliver productivity comparable to a diesel-powered machine while producing zero exhaust emissions and significantly reducing noise. This makes it well suited to jobsites where consideration for the surrounding environment is especially important, including urban areas, residential neighborhoods, schools, and hospitals.

As jobsites change, so do the demands on excavators. Building on its experience and jobsite-first approach, Takeuchi continues to explore new ways to bring greater value to the people who operate and depend on its machines.

Turning Jobsite Challenges into Excavator Possibilities

TB1000 created a new possibility in construction equipment: the compact excavator. For more than half a century since then, Takeuchi has continued to evolve its excavators alongside the changing needs of the jobsite.

As jobsites change, so do the machines they need. Working in tighter spaces, handling a wider range of tasks with a single machine, moving between jobsites, and reducing environmental impact—Takeuchi has continued to listen to the changing needs of the field, addressing each challenge while developing new technologies and machines.

At the heart of this approach is a commitment to continually asking, “What does the jobsite really need?”

Every jobsite presents different challenges. That is why excavators need to offer more than a single solution—they need to open up new possibilities for different jobs and environments.

Takeuchi will continue to listen to the voice of the jobsite, turning new possibilities into excavators that meet the challenges of tomorrow.
